Our South Australian Candidates
In South Australia for the first time, our two candidates are Neil Armstrong and Paul Tippins.
Leading the ticket is Neil Armstrong who has already cut his political teeth for the upper house in the last state elections. Neil has been concerned about the push for Marine Parks without scientific justification.
Born and bred in SA, Neil is a sports nut. Playing football (Aussie rules of course) and later giving his time to coaching at school level. Neil also has a close affinity with the water and especially Surf lifesaving with Port Noarlunga Surf Lifesaving Club. Oh - and fishing!
What sort of fishing? jetty, beach, boat and rock from the age of seven, Neil has fished most areas of South Australia and is the proud owner of a new 18-foot centre console aluminum boat.
Neil is married with two grown sons and one grandson.
Paul Tippins is running second on the South Australian Senate ticket.
A sixth generation native of S.A. born in Wallaroo on the York Peninsula before the move to Adelaide.
Paul had fishing in the blood. His grandfather was a professional line fisherman at Pt. Hughes(Moonta) and as a child helped with the licence on school holidays. Paul is still an avid fisherman.
Paul graduated from the Flinders University of S.A. with a Bachelor of Science in Marine Geology, and in 1985 from Uni S.A. with a Post Graduate Diploma in Applied Geology. After a career in the mining industry Paul moved back to Adelaide to spend more time with his children, now 10 and 12.
Fishing and the outdoors is Paul's other passion. In his own words: "I have fished in all states of Australia in my own vessels or those of friends. In 1981, I spent 3 months working as a deckhand on a prawn trawler based in Townsville, QLD, which, combined with my experiences with my grandfather gave me an insight into the many problems faced by professional fishermen. Between 1992 - 1993, 18 happy months were spent cruising the Queensland coast with my wife from the Whitsundays to Cairns in our own 33 foot steel sloop again based in Townsville."
"As an avid amateur fisherman and outdoorsman, I am by nature a conservationist. As most fishermen know, stocks must be preserved otherwise there will be no fish to catch. Marine Parks that effectively lock people out is not the right way to go" |
